Jimmy in Saigon examines a mysterious death, a radical life and a forbidden romance of a 24-year-old veteran in Vietnam, who died in Saigon in 1972. The rejection of his family’s value by Jimmy and his final death caused a deep trauma in the life of his surviving family and complicated as he remembered. Director Peter McDowell, Jimmy’s younger brother, was only five years old when Jimmy died under the cover of mystery and shame. Jimmy in Saigon follows 10-year search for Peter in order to discover the secrets of Jimmy’s sexual orientation and the rumors of drug use. Peter finds surprising connections with his deceased brother and tries to achieve a new understanding of his own identity as a gay. After leaving the army, Jimmy unexpectedly decided to return to Vietnam as a civilian when the war was still raging. He died a year later. Why do some aspects of the remembered life disappear while others are ongoing? Why are some memories cultivated and others are buried? Piotr’s journey is an empathic lens, thanks to which he can discover Jimmy’s life in Saigon-Historia of Adventure and Love, which was unacceptable and still a challenge at that time.
